Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for light vehicle operations underground
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to operate a light vehicle underground
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures according to workplace procedures
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Plan vehicle operations with consideration to the work activity, route, passengers and equipment safety
   • Communicate verbally and in writing to relevant personnel using approved underground communication methods
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures, and be prepared for emergency situations
2. Drive light vehicle underground
   • Conduct prestart checks and start-up checks on the medium vehicle and ancillary equipment according to workplace procedures
   • Operate the equipment according to manufacturer specifications, and consider the immediate environment/conditions, recommended speed, engine capability, limitations and capacity of equipment
   • Monitor equipment performance indicators/gauges and ensure efficient vehicle operations
   • Operate, steer, manoeuvre and position the vehicle and equipment according to manufacturer specifications
   • Identify and respond to hazardous and/or emergency driving situations according to workplace procedures
   • Process vehicle written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
   • Carry out shut down/parking procedures according to workplace procedures
3. Carry out operator maintenance and housekeeping
   • Carry out equipment inspections to identify faults according to manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures
   • Carry out routine operational servicing, lubrication and housekeeping activities according to workplace procedures
   • Adhere to site underground breakdown procedures
   • Carry out minor maintenance and repairs according to manufacturer specifications
   • Provide operator support during preparation for, and conduct of, major maintenance tasks
   • Report defective or irregular performance to relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
   • Process vehicle written maintenance records according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

operate a light vehicle underground on at least two occasions, including:

organising work activities to comply with site standards

carrying out prestart checks and start-up checks on vehicle and ancillary equipment

identifying and clearly reporting environmental issues

clearly communicating with other personnel

carrying out start up procedures

operating, steering, manoeuvring and positioning vehicle and ancillary equipment

carrying out inspections and identifying faults

processing written records and reports

cleaning, maintaining and storing vehicle and all attachments.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for operating a light vehicle underground

work effectively with others to operate a light vehicle underground in a way that meets all required outcomes

communicate clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and to determine coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key legislation required to operate a light vehicle underground

key policies, procedures and documentation required to operate a light vehicle underground, including:

organisation and site requirements and procedures

hazardous goods procedures and consequences of spills

operational procedures and checks

geological and technical data

principles and techniques for identifying and working within mine operational system

principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies

techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
